The Directorate of Relief and Rehabilitation was created in 1983 based on the recommendations of the Enam Committee. On September 24, 2012, the Directorate of Relief and Rehabilitation and the Bureau of Disaster Management were merged to form the Directorate of Disaster Management. The responsibility of implementing various programs under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief at the field level has been entrusted to this directorate. Due to geographical location, some natural disaster occurs in Bangladesh every year. Floods, cyclones, tidal waves, droughts, heavy rains, non-rainfalls, landslides etc. are faced with various natural disasters almost every year. Apart from dealing with these natural disasters, poverty alleviation through various programs including food/nutrition aid, employment for the poor people of the country is carried out through this department. Rural Infrastructure Reform (Kabikha), Rural Infrastructure Reform (TR), construction of small pools/bridges on rural roads, distribution of VGD/VGF, employment generation for the very poor, construction of coastal area flood shelters, barracks, cyclone-resistant houses including GR among the affected people. (Rice), GR (Cash), Home Construction Grant, Dhoutin, Blanket-Sari-Lungi, Winter Clothes distribution etc. help to healthy/poor people. All the programs of the Disaster Management Directorate are implemented under the supervision of the Upazila Executive Officer and the Upazila Project Implementation Office through the relief wing of the district administration. The structural activities of this department extend to upazila upazila. District level has the office of District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer for project supervision and monitoring. The activities of this department are implemented at the field level under the overall supervision of the district administration. Public representatives at all levels play an important role in accepting and implementing projects for public interest.
